Dr. FATOU BENSOUDA
Dr. Fatou Bensouda served as Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) from 2012 to 2021, the first woman to hold this position. During her tenure, she expanded the ICC’s activities to include 14 investigations and numerous preliminary examinations in global conflicts. Her efforts focused on addressing underreported crimes, including sexual and gender-based violence, mass atrocities affecting children, and the destruction of cultural heritage. Prior to her ICC role, Dr. Bensouda held several high-ranking positions in The Gambia, including Principal State Counsel, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Solicitor General and Legal Secretary of the Republic, and Attorney General and Minister of Justice. She also worked at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda where she served as a Legal Adviser and Trial Attorney before rising to the position of Senior Legal Advisor and Head of the Legal Advisory Unit. Dr. Bensouda has been widely recognized for her contributions to international justice, receiving multiple awards such as the ICJ International Jurists Award, the World Peace Through Law Award, the American Society of International Law’s Honorary Membership Award, and the XXXV Peace Prize by the United Nations Association of Spain. In addition to receiving several honorary doctorates, she has been listed among the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine and as one of Africa’s 50 Most Powerful Women by Forbes Magazine. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021. Dr. Bensouda currently serves as The Gambian High Commissioner to the Court of St. James’s and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the Republics of Austria, Ireland, Finland, the State of Israel and Vatican.
