Call for Expressions of Interest - Graphic Design

CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

Graphic Design

This call for expressions of interest is open to individual specialists (consultants) or a company to undertake the graphic design for the fourth edition of the Dallaire Institute Handbook for Security Sector Actors in 2023 (For reference, see a sample of the third edition, available here: Dallaire Institute Handbook for Security Sector Actors).

Background

The Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security (Dallaire Institute) Handbook is an indispensable tool for preventing the recruitment and use of children in armed conflict. The Third Edition was published in 2017 prior to the launch of the Vancouver Principles on Peacekeeping and the Prevention of the Recruitment and Use of Child Soldiers (Vancouver Principles), which the Dallaire Institute co-drafted with the Government of Canada. To date, the Dallaire Institute has trained more than 15,000 security sector actors in over 100 countries, and the Handbook has been a cornerstone resource, both to accompany in-class training and simulations developed by the Dallaire Institute, and as an in-theatre aide memoire.

Scope of work

The Dallaire Institute is now undertaking a project to update, redesign, and translate the Handbook to consolidate the research and learnings developed over the last five years, as well as its translation into multiple languages. The content for the Fourth Edition of the Handbook is being developed, with the final version scheduled to be ready at the end of September 2023. In this regard, the Dallaire Institute would like to identify a consultant to undertake the graphic design portion of the update (translation and printing will be coordinated by the Dallaire Institute).

The graphic designer would be responsible for all aspects of the handbook’s design and text layout, including the development of approx. 4-6 infographics. The designer would need to complete the initial design for the English version of the Handbook, followed by the translated versions (French, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic). Given the specificities of working on designs in Arabic, we would also welcome proposals from consultants who could prepare all languages except Arabic or who would be interested in only working on the Arabic version. A full creative brief will be provided to the selected consultant.

Timeline

An approximate timeline for the work follows. The final production timeline would be decided on and finalized with the consultant selected.

  • Start of contract approx.. September 25th

  • September 30th, Final draft of content is ready

  • September 25th – November 17th Graphic design of English version, including time for two rounds of feedback

  • November 17th Delivery of the final English version, ready for the printer

  • November 17th – December 8th Preparation of translated versions

  • December 8th Delivery of translated versions

Eligibility

The candidate should have graphic design experience working on similar publications (such as books, reports, guides/toolkits or educational materials) and infographics.

How to apply: Please send your CV and relevant work samples with a brief email outlining your motivation and qualifications for the consultancy to ashley@dallaireinstitute.org. Please specify whether you intend to work on the task as an individual or company. Please also include a rough estimate for the work based on approximately 100 pages and the sample of the previous edition. A more formal quote will be requested at the time of contracting when the Handbook length should be finalized.

Deadline: September 18th, 2023
